Personal and Professional Background

Chima Michail Onyeike, born on June 21, 1975, in Zeist, Netherlands, brings a rich blend of experience and expertise to the Super Eagles as the newly appointed fitness coach. With dual nationality, he represents both the Netherlands and Nigeria, adding a unique perspective to the team’s coaching staff. Onyeike, who is currently without a club, has a significant history both as a player and a coach, marking him as a valuable asset to the Super Eagles.

Playing Career Highlights

Onyeike’s playing career spanned several clubs across the Netherlands. Beginning his professional journey in 1995 with HFC Haarlem, he showcased his talent as a striker, accumulating a total of 65 goals in 257 club appearances over the course of his career. His journey through Dutch football saw him playing for notable teams such as Dordrecht, Excelsior, VVV-Venlo (on loan), TOP Oss, Cambuur, and Quick Boys, before retiring in July 2011.

Transition to Coaching

After hanging up his boots, Onyeike pursued a career in fitness coaching, a transition that was underpinned by his academic pursuit in sports university to obtain a diploma in fitness. His post-playing career took off with a personal training role, where he worked with renowned players like Roy Makaay and Aleksandr Kerzhakov, showcasing his ability to elevate athletes’ physical performances.

Notable Coaching Positions:

  • FK Anzhi Makhachkala: Onyeike joined the Russian club as a fitness coach in July 2011, marking the beginning of his international coaching career.
  • PAOK Salonika: His expertise then took him to Greece, where he served as the fitness coach from June 2013 until November 2014.
  • VfB Stuttgart: Onyeike continued to build his resume in Germany, working as a fitness coach from November 2014 to June 2016.
  • Willem II Tilburg: Before joining the Super Eagles, he was at Dutch club Willem II from July 2018 until June 2022 as a conditioning coach, his last position before assuming his new role.
