The Federal Government has issued a urgent warning to residents of nine northern states, alerting them to expect heavy rainfall and significant flooding between August 25 and 29, 2025.
The advisory, released on Monday by the National Flood Early Warning Centre under the Federal Ministry of Environment, specifically lists 15 communities considered to be at high risk.
The alert comes just days after the ministry predicted flooding in seven other states, indicating a worsening situation across the country’s northern region.
States and Communities at Risk
According to the directive signed by Usman Abdullahi Bokani, Director of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, the following areas are likely to be affected:
· Adamawa: Abba-Kumbo, Mubi, Shelleng
· Bauchi: Azare, Jama’a
· Borno: Ngala
· Gombe: Nafada
· Jigawa: Gwaram
· Kano: Sumaila
· Katsina: Bindawa, Kaita, Katsina
· Sokoto: Makira
· Zamfara: Anka
Urgent Evacuation Order for River Niger Communities
In a separate but related development, the ministry issued a direct evacuation order for all communities situated on the flood plains along the River Niger, specifically from Jebba down to Lokoja.
The warning cited the continuously rising water level of the river, stating, “communities on the flood plain from Jebba to Lokoja are advised to evacuate immediately.”
Recent Flooding Highlights the Threat
The urgency of these warnings is underscored by recent events. The northern state of Yobe has already been grappling with severe flooding that displaced hundreds of residents.
The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency reported that floods in the Potiskum area sacked 102 households, displacing 612 people. Women and children were said to be the majority of the affected, with areas like Old Prison, Filin Mashe, Afghanistan, and Jigawa among the worst hit.
The government is urging residents in all listed areas to take immediate precautions, move to higher ground, and adhere to all safety advisories from local authorities.
